Betting the Champions League group stage with ETH: my midweek routine
Champions League nights are the highlight of my football week. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in autumn, eight or nine matches at once, and a lot of teams I rarely see in my own league. I bet on them with ETH, and over a couple of seasons I have settled into a routine that keeps it fun and stops me from spreading money too thin.
On Monday I look at the fixtures and pick no more than three matches for the week. With so many games on, it is tempting to bet on all of them. I learned the hard way that I know very little about half the clubs in the group stage, and my results on those matches were poor.
For the three I choose, I read the team news on Monday and again on matchday afternoon. Rotation is common in the group stage, especially for big clubs that have already qualified or have a heavy weekend coming. A star resting on the bench changes the match more than any statistic.
I fund my sportsbook balance once on Monday, using a layer 2 network when the book supports it. Gas on mainnet can be annoying on busy evenings, and I do not want to be waiting for a deposit to confirm ten minutes before kick-off. If the book only takes mainnet ETH, I deposit early in the day when fees are usually lower.
The markets I use most are the match result, both teams to score and the total goals line. I have mostly stopped betting on correct scores and first goalscorers. They are fun, but they lose me money steadily.
Price differences between books are bigger on these nights than people think, especially on matches involving smaller clubs. I keep accounts at two or three sportsbooks that take ETH and compare the price on each pick before placing it. The difference is often a few percent, which adds up over a season.
My stake on each match is fixed in ETH and stays the same all group stage. If the price of ETH jumps, I do not raise it. If I have a bad week, I do not chase on Wednesday what I lost on Tuesday.
After the final whistle on Wednesday, I write down each bet and the result in a simple spreadsheet. By the end of the group stage I can see which kinds of bets work for me. For the last two seasons, it has been totals on matches between mid-ranked clubs.
